Maya Hair - How to Easy Make Hair in Maya

Description
In this video we look at Maya hair. Hair is a hard thing to copy from real life. There is a lot of hair on one head. How can you show that in 3D, without crashing your computer?

As it turns out, it is not that complicated at all. Matt Barr is going to show us how he does it. I'm really excited about this tutorial because it can give a lot to a character. and there isn't really any good tutorials out there.

Matt Barr is one of the fastest learning persons I know. He is learning every thing in he's spare time and is also taking a bachelor in Finances. Which I think is incredible.

Check out Matt's website to see more of his work.

I hope you enjoy the tutorial. Feel free to leave a comment, and maybe tell us how you use hair on your characters.

I’m trying to make the hair into hairSystemShape 1, but I get this.

//Warning: Hair can only be created on NURBS or polygon surfaces.

do you know why ? doesn’t happen on your video :)

Hi I followed the tutorial, a useful one, amazing! But now doing the character rigging, and i wonder if there’s a way to attach the hair system to a polygon object.

I followed your tutorial and made the hair using curves. How do I get the Hair to follow the head when I animate my character? I have the rig and everything set up for him, just don’t know how to get the hair to follow.

Example image, the houses are just a rough idea of what they will look like.

@Christopher, I got an e-mail explaining a faster way to make the curves. If you select the edge loops and go to Modify -> Convert -> Poly Edges to Curves... You get the same result with less work :)

@Dutchlilly, Great question. I found a method that should work for you! Before you create your hair systems, create a wrap deformer for the curves using the poly hair shapes. Continue the rest as you normally would. Finally, when you are binding the skin, remember to bind the poly hair shapes to the correct head bone(s), and paint skin weights if you need to.

Hi!

Great Tutorial!
Now my question is, can I attach this hair to the head (at the roots), and make it a follow-trough (when the character turns his head, the hair reacts to that with a sort of delay in it) ?

Hi, I’m using Maya ’11 so I have to convert the hair. I’m editing now. I’m using the hair for the eyebrows, and using "v" just to hold the EPs onto the vertices of the model. It’s tedious, but, I move the points out by hand. One eyebrow looks nice, even with MR test renders W/O conversion . . . There is the head hair to do . . . Will make a shape to follow like you do here on Santa for the beard.
